Due to its distinct chemical features, trestolone (7alpha-methyl-19-n/testosterone/Ment) or trestolone was one of several 19-nortestosterone derivatives that were explored as potential male contraceptive therapies. Due to progesterone's capacity to inhibit spermatogenesis, pharma companies initially combined progesterone with testosterone in an effort to create a workable male contraceptive option. Trestolone is an ideal choice for an androgen male contraception since it cannot bind to 5alpha-reductase and cannot convert to DHT. Trestolone is theoretically 23 times more anabolic and 6.5 times more androgenic than testosterone due to its ratio of 2300 to 650. However, a 1992 study in rats discovered that this drug's anabolic potency was 10X greater than that of testosterone and that it also had a 12X larger suppressive effect on HTPA.

The distinct alpha-methyl group on carbon 7 of the molecule is the cause of this. Under the steroidal ring structure, this methyl group protrudes and sterically limits the conversion to DHT.  Trestolone, although being a 19-nortestosterone derivative, can still aromatize and perform other androgen-dependent processes, which allows it to work in the body much like testosterone. Despite being a nandrolone derivative, trestolone has also been demonstrated to have a negligible affinity for the progesterone and mineralocorticoid receptors.
