Due to its unique chemical properties, trestolone (7alpha-methyl-19-nortestosterone/Ment) was one of several 19-nortestosterone derivatives investigated as potential male contraceptives. Initially, pharmaceutical companies combined progesterone with testosterone to develop a viable male contraceptive, leveraging progesterone's ability to inhibit spermatogenesis. Trestolone is a suitable candidate for androgen-based male contraception because it does not bind to 5alpha-reductase and cannot convert to DHT. Theoretically, trestolone is 23 times more anabolic and 6.5 times more androgenic than testosterone, with an anabolic to androgenic ratio of 2300 to 650. However, a 1992 rat study found that its anabolic potency was 10 times greater than testosterone, and it had a 12 times stronger suppressive effect on the HPTA.

This effect is due to the distinct alpha-methyl group on the 7th carbon of the molecule, which protrudes under the steroidal ring structure and sterically hinders conversion to DHT. Although trestolone is a 19-nortestosterone derivative, it can still aromatize and perform other androgen-dependent functions, acting similarly to testosterone in the body. Despite being a nandrolone derivative, trestolone has shown minimal affinity for progesterone and mineralocorticoid receptors. As an anabolic steroid, trestolone promotes significant muscle growth and enhances the body's protein synthesis dynamics. Minors should avoid using this substance due to its potential to induce rapid sexual maturity. Trestolone is a synthetic steroid initially developed as an androgen replacement and is considered highly potent. It is used medically for conditions such as rapid bone loss, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, primary hypogonadism, cachexia (muscle wasting syndrome), sarcopenia, induced anabolism, and male pattern baldness.
